Do you believe it's never too late to change?

Sitting and watching the youngest person start a new job, full of hope, ambition and energy reminds my cynical self how old I am. Once a brightly “we can change the world” type, to a “what an idiot, that’ll never work “ cynic after a decade in the job, I wonder if that’s my lot. Is this all there is? Is it too late for me?

Whilst I know an answer could be “ it’s never too late”, that sentence is perhaps best served with a cheque for 10 million dollars because navigating change with fiscal responsibilities is no simple feat.

Spending a year getting into debt, having abruptly quit a job, and having to quieten the “it’s too late for you” thoughts that implant themselves after every rejection and at every unexpected turn is precisely the reason many fear change. It’s rarely as simple as people make it look. The smile on your first day betrays the ugly journey that can accompany taking the leap of faith into change.

Not all change is difficult, some people navigate change with the ease of buttering soft butter on bread. Whilst that hasn’t been my experience I acknowledge that some achieve magnificent change that is like a wonderful storybook. It’s beautiful to behold when it works, but for those whose paths look like a nightmarish mountain climb in the dark with no shoes and 1200ft drops on either side, is there hope?
